unless washington gets its act together 90% of americans will see their taxes rise as a series of tax increase and spending cuts take effect. yet negotiations between the white house and congressional republicans are at a standstill. anna werner is in our washington bureau. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. unless congress comes to an agreement on the fiscal cliff it would mean a tax hike plus some $65 billion would be cut from the pentagon and other government agencies. both sides are hoping for a compromise. but so far all there's been is debate. >> i've been keeping my own naughty and nice list for washington. >> reporter: president obama took his fight to the public while visiting a toy company in pennsylvania where he warned republicans not to play scrooge. >> it's not acceptable to me and i don't think it's acceptable for you for a handful of republicans to hold middle class tax cuts held hostage. >> reporter: the white house proposal includes $4 trillion in deficit reduction, $400 billion in cuts to entitlement and $50 billion in infrastructure. john

in washington for jpmorgan chase. the probe covers $5.8 billion in losses. it is caused by the london whale, a trader that got a reputation for big bats with complex financial investments. the wide net that the subcommittee appears to be casting will not necessarily lead to any formal charges against the bank, any formal hearings on the trading losses or any scathing reports. senator carl levin, the chairman of this subcommittee, criticized the bank in may when it announced this law saying it "made a very big and complicated that that now has gone very wrong." he is now one of the sentence leading critics of wall street. they did not comment on our story today. if a probe generates any substantive results, that could mean war headaches for ceo jamie dimon. it has been investigated whether -- that issue as well as the bank's internal controls oversight of traders and other matters could be among the subjects of the subcommittee's probe. melissa: peter barnes, thank you so much. lori: breaking news out of egypt. thousands of protesters ready to march on the palace to protest president morsy.

. the 10-year projections. when was last time in washington 10-year spending projections actually came in at or below what the projections were meant to be? it never happens. same is true on the revenue side with taxes. i think the numbers we're laying out here are probably the quote, unquote best-case scenario in terms of what could actually happen. just in terms of the pure math. not in terms whether or not it is good policy, just in terms of pure math. one reason going over the cliff looks more attractive in terms of bottom line numbers because there is that huge tax number. now, there are all sorts of reasons beyond that --. melissa: why is that, to raise that much revenue and give it to the government? i don't understand why that is appealing? >> it is not appealing to me. melissa: okay. >> it would be ap peeling from a math perspective because the number is bigger. but the problem is, the number won't be that big no matter what happens. you can talk about dynamic scoring. look at different ways revenue won't be revenue it is projected to be. you're talking about something that wo
